Abstract: While the American Dream, “the ideal of a happy and successful life to which all may aspire,” is a concept that is deeply entrenched in the imagery and imagination of people around the world the African dream seems to have gone up in smoke. In this article we take a closer look at Anglophone (mainly Southern African authors, Francophone (Annanisoh) and Lusophone (Pepetela) African crime writing - a genre normally characterized by its propensity for reality, socio-economic and socio-political settings - and see in which way Africans dream/dreamt about their future.
