Novices from Various Language Backgrounds in an ESL Class:
Contribution from the Community of learners

Abstract: This study investigates aspects of classroom practices in ESL environment. The main research questions are worded as follows: How do learners grapple with difficulties that arise during the accomplishment of the task? What are the means they use to solve those problems? How do individual participants relate to each other during the task? On the whole I intend to scrutinize ways and means employed by participants - learners - to tackle the task requiring them to explain English proverbs. It turned out that despite some acute limitations in terms of linguistic and cultural knowledge, learners’ contribution was way beyond expectations, in terms of interactive actions towards the execution of the task.
